Rich People Get More Creative Jobs, Research Shows
Rich People Get More Creative Jobs, Research Shows It takes guts to make it as a professional artist. But having a trust fund definitely doesnât hurt. Karol Jan Borowiecki, an economics professor at the University of Southern Denmark, studied 160 years worth of U.S. census data to see how things like geography, race, and wealth have influenced generations of creatives. His findings, published in a working paper in March, show that the art world is becoming more diverse. Racial inequality is changingâ"albeit slowlyâ"and a growing number of women are entering creative fields. The bad news is, the barrier to entry clearly pits the financial haves against the have-nots. Borowiecki compared the uptake of creative careers from 1850 to 2010 to âtotal family income,â or the pre-tax earnings of immediate family members. The more money an individualâs family had, he found, the more likely they were to become a writer, musician, or other type of artist. After all, creative jobs donât pay well, and can be unstable. The metropolitan enclaves artists flock toâ"cities like New York and Los Angelesâ"are some of the most expensive places to live, too. Devoting yourself to the life of a âstarving artistâ is a lot less risky if your family has enough money to make sure you donât actually starve. Even if your parents donât bankroll your lifestyle, Borowiecki points out, âOne could hypothesize ⦠if my family is well off, and my career doesnât go as planned, I can fall back on that financial net.â The richer the family, the bigger the safety net, according to Borowieckiâs research. With every $10,000 you have in âtotal family income,â youâre about 2% more likely to go into a creative occupation, according to Borowieckiâs research. So someone whoâs family income is $100,000 is twice as likely to become an artist than someone whoâs family income is $50,000. And someone whoâs family income is $1 million is nearly ten times, or 90 percentage points, more likely to go into a creative profession than someone whoâs family income is $100,000. âTotal family incomeâ can include money a creativeâs parents and siblings made in the previous year, so itâs not necessarily wealth they grew up with, Borowiecki says. But as myriad studies have shown, if your family is wealthy, thereâs a good chance youâve benefited from it. Especially these days. Research cited in a 2017 New York Times story tracked the average amount of money twenty-somethings get from their parents today. Those in the art and design fields get the most help at $3,600 a year, according to the Times. Twenty-somethings in blue collar and military jobs get less than half that, about $1,400 a year. In 2014, reporters at NPR compared the salaries of people in different occupations to their parentsâ income. Growing up, designers, musicians, and artists had some of the highest household incomes ($65,000 to $69,000) â" the same as chief executives, engineers, and architects. If youâre a person in the artsâ"or want to beâ"and donât enjoy the privileges of inherited wealth, this isnât exactly encouraging. But itâs worth stepping back and remembering that while coming from a wealthy family might make getting into the arts easier, you canât buy the talent, experience, or fortitude it takes to actually make art (or good art, for that matter). In a roundabout way, Borowiecki has studied this, too. His previous research, published in the Review of Economics and Statistics in 2017, dove into the personal letters of three of the most famous composers in history â" Mozart, Beethoven, and Liszt. Borowiecki found a positive relationship between the composersâ income and well-being; commercial success made all of them happy. But a lack of money didnât make the artists less happy. They actually created fewer pieces of music during periods of stability (landing a tenured position, settling into a marriage) than in more economically tumultuous periods. The point? The circumstances of lifeâ"not the benefits of wealthâ"drove their art.

3 Steps To An Outstanding Personal Branding Statement - Work It Daily
3 Steps To An Outstanding Personal Branding Statement - Work It Daily Your resume is an amazingly important document. It not only speaks to your past accomplishments, but it also acts as a predictor of your future capabilities. However, your resume can't successfully complete this task if it isn't packed with quality information. This includes an outstanding personal branding statement. What is a personal branding statement? It is a statement that communicates who you are in the workplace. Borrowed from the marketing world, it reflects your professional reputation. On your resume, the statement is used to summarize, in just a few words, who you are. This is why it's so important to take formulaic steps in order to develop one that gets the job done. Personal Branding Statement Example And Formula To get started, take a look at a branding statement that delivers the goods:COMMUNITY AFFAIRS MANAGER with 10 years of experience visualizing, developing, and organizing company wide philanthropic events, maintaining connections with hundreds of nonprofit organizations, coordinating diverse employee volunteer opportunities, and creating dynamic external and internal event communications. Why is it successful? It gives a snapshot of your history in the field while providing branding attributes that describe what makes you successful. Also, it gives examples of previous accomplishments that offer insight into how you can help an employer succeed. So, which formula could you use to create your own? 1. Consider Your Outlook On The World It may seem a bit far-reaching to say that your overall outlook on life can create a great personal branding statement, but in actuality, it is your outlook that has guided you to your profession and has helped you develop your talents. So, take time to write down your vision. Do you want people to communicate better with one another? Do you hope to expand the breadth of our already-expansive technology? Think about what it is that can help you create the broad umbrella encompassing all of the specific goals your branding statement will incorporate. 2. Think About Your Individual Goals Again, a personal branding statement is all about showing an employer that you have goalsâ"and that you not only intend to achieve them in the future but already have in the past. So, what are your career goals? How do you want to make a difference? Write down what you'd like to achieveâ"along with those skills you possess that can help you attain your goals. 3. Look At Your Attributes And Professional History Finally, it's important to recognize your brand attributes, then apply them to your professional history. To identify your attributes, come up with at least three nouns to describe yourself as a professional. Are you a great communicator, leader, visionary, or organizer? Then drum up three sentences that round out your professional history in relation to those attributes (e.g. I have 15 years of experience leading groups through philanthropic efforts). After completing these goals, you'll have enough information to create a truly outstanding personal branding statement that not only gives an employer confidence in your ability to succeed but boosts your own confidence as a top professional. Struggling With Your Job Search? Make Sure You're Branding Yourself Correctly... If you're looking for a job, your personal brand determines how much you'll stand out to potential employers in the job search. This 1 Tactic Is All You Need to Overcome Imposter Syndrome
This 1 Tactic Is All You Need to Overcome Imposter Syndrome Ive been coaching an incredible woman, Alison, who had recently been promoted from manager to director. In preparation for our 6 month coaching anniversary, I went back through all of my bedrngnises and pulled out key themes of topics that we been talking about. The list included many things you would expect (and challenges so many female managers struggle with) how to be better at delegating, how to deal with staff who did notlage do a good job on delegated tasks, figuring out what she is most passionate about, learning to say no and remembering that if you dont know what you want, you wont ask for it, and you wont get it.As we went through the list, we shared reflections about each of the items. Then, Alison stepped back, thought hard for a moment, and said it kind of feels like all of the things on the list really get back to one single issue. I need to believe that I am good enough to be the director, and then act like I really am the director. As I sat therbeie watching her, through our Zoom call, I could see this wave of realization welchesh over her.I was in complete agreement She was struggling with impostor syndrome. In fact, we had talked about impostor syndrome at our second meeting together. I had even forwarded her an article about it. But, at the time, she wasnt ready to think about the idea that she was experiencing impostor syndrome. She was so deeply rooted in it, believing so much that she did not really deserve the job she was given that she couldnt even fathom how impostor syndrome would fit in.Alison is not alone. Not even close. As reported in Forbes, people who experience impostorsyndrome are high achieversunable to internalize and accept their success, often attributing their accomplishments to luck rather than to ability, and fear that others will eventually unmask them as frauds. As women get promoted, particularly to management positions and beyond, they are often not given the support they need. This is so unfortunate, because almost 3/4 of women experience impostor syndrome. And experiencing impostor syndrome affects the way you interact with those around you, and ultimately can be detrimental for your self-esteem, your self-confidence and your career. A research study of over 200 professionals found that when people experienced impostor syndrome, they had lower pay, were promoted less frequently and were less satisfied at work.Christine Michel Carter writer, speaker and consultant advising on the mindset of Black women and millennial moms says that when women ignore impostor syndrome, it either progresses into anxiety or summit syndrome, which is basically just the act of chasing an unattainable corporate high. Its not only difficult to function in both spaces, but they are also bad for your career. So, what is one thing you can do to overcome impostor syndrome? To figure out how to address impostor syndrome, I went right to the top. I spoke to Dr. Vale rie Young, an internationally-known expert on impostor syndrome and author of award-winning book The Secret Thoughts of Successful Women Why Capable People Suffer from the Impostor Syndrome and How to Thrive in Spite of It.What you want is to stop feeling like an impostor. But feelings are the last to change, she said. Instead we need to understand that people who dont feel like impostors are no more capable or intelligent or talented than those who do. The only difference between them and us is that in the same situation that triggers impostor feelings in us a job interview, starting a business, having our work critiqued, getting a promotion they are thinking different thoughts. Thats it.She continued This is really good news, because all we have to do is learn to think like non-impostors. The only way to stop feeling like an impostor, you have to stop thinking like an impostor. It isnt an action you need to change. You just have to realize that your feelings are not rational.Alis on tried this tactic and saw immediate results.Alison and I talked about how she could approach situations with a different mindset. Rather than starting a conversation assuming people dont think shes good enough, what if she really focused on the facts?Within one day, she began an incredible transformation and sent me this emailI had a meeting and tried my best to keep our conversation in mind throughout. I wasnt really as focused on having all of the answers, but focused on the questions that would help lead us to some decisions. It went well.I paid more attention to the types of things my kollektiv members was talking about, and for the first time was able to see what hea male colleague that reports to herwas saying with a different perspective. Our conversation helped me to realize that he wasnt resisting or pushing back against me, he just has a different way to look at things and different priorities.Paying more attention to why he was making the suggestions he was making (as opposed to just assuming that he was implying that I am not good at my job, not worthy, etc.) also helped me realize that one of the things I bring to the position is historical knowledge of our organization and industry that he doesnt have. I know we have spoken about that before, but it was just today that I really internalized it and it clicked.Reading her email gave me tingles. The idea that Alison could approach the meeting with this one different tactic in mind and was immediately able to see her unique value is amazing.Overcoming impostor syndrome in a journey, not a one-time action. But changing your mindset has the power to begin that transformation. What would it take for you to approach your next work meeting with this tactic in mind that people without impostor syndrome are no better, they just think differently? Are you ready to transform how you feel about your own value? Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter cate gory. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 1000000 construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in th e Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list a t $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.
